Scent of a house
I’d like to think I splurge more on home fragrances than myself. When I came across the Ekam range from the Mangaluru-based company (Ekamonline.com), I felt like I had struck gold. If you want your home to smell of forest, rain, wet trees and crushed leaves, Ekam’s Teakwood Woody Fragrance Oil is for you. I discovered this masterfully blended oil by my neighbor, whose house not only looked straight out of a decorating magazine, but also smelled divine. With citrus and nutmeg top notes, floral and spicy middle notes and distinct woody base notes of cedarwood, musk, sandalwood and vanilla, the aroma lingers when you use Teakwood Perfume Oil is the delicious rounded notes that you can’t get enough of. Their Noir perfume oil with notes of musk, vanilla and patchouli is perfect for an evening at home. I have also tried their candles and eau de parfum and can confidently say that the brand delivers on its promise of high quality scented products. —Nandita Iyer

Despite the slightly competitive element, it’s a super relaxing game with a very active online community on Facebook, with several real-life designers who share inspiring tips and designs. And it’s free unless you buy the monthly season pass; each month has a theme, which keeps pace with current global design trends. So go on and flex your creative muscles – at least it’s better than playing Candy Crush! —Shabonti Bagchi

Composting made easy
A few things are on the periphery of my home to-do list. These require extra time and effort, which is impossible when you have to meet working deadlines. One of them was composting, until my husband ordered a Stone Soup brand home composting kit. I didn’t have the bandwidth to learn how to do this so this kit was extremely helpful. It comes with a porous tray, ready-to-use compost and bricks with coconut fibers for plants, all lifesavers. Almost all wet kitchen scraps go there and after about three weeks they produce the most nutritious fertilizer. The only downside is the size: at 15 litres, ours is a bit small for everyday use. A bigger 20 liter would have been a better choice. Despite this, however, it has been a rewarding experience so far. The fertilizer is used for our indoor plants and the results are evident when the lemon tree sprouts leaves, the tulsi grows tall and the bougainvillea blooms. —Jahnabee Borah
