Community devastated after tragic death of ‘top mechanic’ in Glasgow’s Shawlands
HUNDREDS of people have shared their devastation after police named the tragic victim of a fatal crash in Shawlands.
We previously reported that George Jarvis was hit by a car on Kilmarnock Road on Friday March 4.
The 69-year-old was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, where he died three days later.
George was a well-known mechanic who ran his own garage in Pollokshaws.
The community paid tribute to him after the police named him yesterday.
One person said: “George was a gentleman. When I picked up my car he showed me pictures of his daughters. He was such a proud and humble man, the best mechanic.”
Another added: “I was so sad to hear what happened to George, I was talking to him just two weeks ago to get my car fixed. We haven’t talked about my car at all. He talked about his daughters the apple of his He talked about me he remembered everything He looked after me and my cars for 20 years and I can’t tell you how much I I was devastated to hear this devastating news. What a lovely man. I felt like he was my friend, and he was. I will miss you George.
Someone wrote: “My whole family used George’s garage because he was very honest and always did a great job… He was a pure gentleman and will definitely be missed. RIP George .”
Another added: “My family and I have used George’s garage for decades and would never go anywhere else. Always honest and decent and would do his best for you. We had many great conversations with him. He was so proud of his daughters. I think they were his life. Such a sad loss, for us normal people, and for the motor trade.
Someone said: “RIP George, a great loss to the motor trade, the last of the old school. Thinking of your family and friends.”
Another commented: “I knew George years ago when I worked at Finlays in Shawlands. Such a lovely, kind man. Lots of family love.”
Someone wrote: “George was such a gentleman, my condolences to his family. He used George for years on my cars and his binoculars were his life, so proud of them, sleep well.”
Police are appealing for witnesses following the accident.
Sergeant Adnan Alam, of the Greater Glasgow Highway Police Unit, said: ‘At this time our thoughts are with George’s loved ones as they come to terms with their terrible loss.
“We are continuing our investigations to establish the full circumstances of the incident and are asking anyone who has not yet provided information to contact the police.
