Givaudan to acquire Custom Essence Fragrance House

As part of its 2025 strategy to expand the capabilities of its fragrance business, Givaudan has entered into an agreement to acquire Custom Essence, a US-based fragrance creation house.

Founded in 1981, Custom Essence is a family business based in New Jersey. They specialize in the formulation of natural fragrances and create fragrances in all categories for local and regional customers and for larger customers. The company employs 70 people worldwide.

The unique know-how of Custom Essence in the creation of natural fragrances has greatly contributed to their success in the USA and in particular in natural products for the personal care category. Driven by a culture of creativity, agility and quality, they have won the loyalty of a large customer base for whom they have created some of the top fragrance products preferred by consumers in the United States.

Maurizio Volpi, President of Givaudan Fragrance & Beauty, said: “We are delighted to announce the acquisition of Custom Essence as it fits perfectly into our 2025 strategy to expand our presence with local and regional customers and develop our capabilities in natural fragrances. Custom Essence will bring real expertise in the management of a rapidly growing customer segment, as well as valuable know-how in the formulation of natural fragrances. Givaudan’s technology, regulation, supply chain and global manufacturing support will allow us to evolve rapidly to deliver even better value to our customers. Although the terms of the deal are not being disclosed, Custom Essence’s business is believed to have represented around $ 40 million in additional sales compared to Givaudan’s 2020 results on a proforma basis.

Givaudan expects the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of 2021 and will fund the transaction from existing resources.
