Surat: Hundreds of people joined the funeral procession on Tuesday for Grishma Vekaria, 21, who was killed by her school friend Fenil Goyani (22) when she refused to have a relationship with him.
The funeral was held after the girl’s father arrived from Africa early Tuesday morning.
In the meantime, the investigation of the murder case has been entrusted to a special investigation team (SIT) set up by the police. An officer with the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police will lead the investigation.
Scores of residents, some unable to control their emotions, lined up on the side of a road and poured flower petals on the van carrying Vekariya’s body. The procession was evacuated under police protection.
The funeral procession set off from Vekariya’s house at Pasodara in Kamrej in the morning and then reached Ashwini Kumar crematorium in Surat city after traveling a distance of about 10 km. Many people from different walks of life joined the motorbike and car funeral procession in sympathy for the woman’s family.
Citizens have also demanded capital punishment for the accused Goyani who is hospitalized while attempting suicide after killing his schoolmate and stabbing his underage brother and uncle. Last Saturday, Goyani reportedly slit Vekaria’s throat with a knife in public view even as her family begged to let her go. Goyani also injured her uncle and brother when they tried to save her. Later, an alleged video of the murder went viral on social media platforms, sparking outrage among citizens.
Goyani, who attempted suicide by cutting his vein after the incident, was arrested and a case was filed against him under the relevant provisions. The police investigation revealed that the accused and the victim had studied together at school.
