No shortage of Christmas toys to worry about |
People are advised not to panic to buy before the holiday season.
Fears have arisen in recent weeks as one of the UK’s largest toy retailers has warned that delays at UK ports could lead to shortages this Christmas.
A congestion of containers at ports, Covid restrictions and a shortage of truck drivers have sparked widespread concern among retailers about future inventory.
The shortage of drivers in the UK means shipping containers are unloaded but left stacked on the quayside awaiting collection.
The lack of drivers also means there is a delay in returning empty containers for reuse.
These issues arise at the busiest time of the year for retailers, when most goods are imported from Asia to be sold during the Christmas trade.
The UK’s largest container port facility at Felixstowe, Suffolk, has reached capacity in recent weeks and has had to turn down ships.
Last week, shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk hijacked ships from the facility in south-east England and warned the problem could persist until the New Year.
However, the UK government has since said the port, where most imported toys enter the UK before the journey continues, had reported “improved capacity in recent days”.
Industry bosses here on the island hope to reassure customers that there is no need to panic about buying as Christmas approaches.
Director of The Entertainer in Douglas, Andy Gibson, told Manx Radio: âWe know there has been a lot of news not only about us, but many industries have already experienced shipping delays this year.
âBut all I can say is The Entertainer’s shelves will be filled with toys this Christmas.
âSome of the bigger must-have toys are selling out a lot faster than you expect, so in all fairness some things might not be available at Christmas, but some things are about the same in most years. . “
He added: “All [The Entertainer] stores across the UK are well stocked [and] we expect more deliveries in the coming weeks.
“For us on the Isle of Man we have a lot of stock at the moment, so we have to panic for now, but don’t leave it too long.”
The most popular toys last year were LOL dolls, interactive pets, and Baby Yoda themed toys. Brands that tend to create a sensation year after year are LOL Surprise, Paw Patrol, Playmobil, Star Wars, Barbie, and LEGO.
They are also expected to be a big hit for 2021.
