Ride Fat Bikes in Wisconsin This Winter
We all know that winter is the perfect time to go skiing, tube sliding or snowmobiling, but did you know that it’s also the perfect time to ride a bike with fat tires?
What is the Fat Tire Bike?
Yesterday I saw this video on Travel Wisconsin Facebook and I was immediately fascinated…
Before we get into the Wisconsin trail featured in this video, let’s dive into what fat tire biking is all about. According to femmecycliste.com;
A fat bike is a bike with tires that are 4 inches or larger, often up to 5 inches. These tires can run at very low pressure and allow you to ride on snow or sand.
Essentially, a fat tire bike is a mountain bike with wider tires that provide more stability and traction on all types of terrain. The Femme Cyclist article says you can try winter biking on a mountain bike with plus-size tires (2.6 to 3.2 inches wide), but warns that most bike paths winter will allow nothing less than 4-inch-wide tires. Obviously you need to dress for the cold, and having flat pedals with pins on your bike is highly recommended.
