The Castle ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is a perfect luxury hotel for a weekend getaway
Did you know that the Rocky horror Castle, known as Oakley Court, is actually a luxury hotel just a short drive from London’s Heathrow Airport? Maybe the next time you find yourself in the UK you should make a pit stop in Windsor, where you can take a selfie of yourself doing the ‘Time Warp’ in one of the ultimate filming locations.
The 1975 film adaptation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of the earliest representations of subversive sexuality – at least in horror-musical form. It’s also one of the first “ cult movies ” that come to mind, and the midnight screenings still draw fans from all over the world.
Located in Windsor, England – a short walk from Heathrow (approx 20 minutes) – this quintessential country house is where many of the film’s most recognizable scenes were filmed, acting as the home of Dr Frank-N -Furter, also known as “Frankenstein Square”.
You’ll no doubt recognize the entrance to Oakley Court, where newly engaged couple Brad and Janet were wet before being welcomed inside on the craziest night of their lives. There is also the famous staircase and the hall where the dinner scene was filmed.
While the hotel has 118 rooms, fans of the film who book a stay at the Rocky horror Castle will want to make sure to book one of the nine ‘manor suites’ inside Oakley Court, as these are the only hotel rooms that are part of the original manor structure.
Frank-N-Furter fans gather at the Rocky horror castle every year to celebrate the movie during the Time Warp Picnic. For £ 260 you can get overnight accommodation at Oakley Court, a full English breakfast, an afternoon buffet on the lawns, and a late-night film screening. While the big 2020 event has been canceled due to COVID-19, next year’s event – scheduled for Sunday, August 29, 2021 – is expected to take place and reservations will open soon. And if you are looking to take a day trip Rocky horror castle but not really stay on the ground? Al fresco dining at The Terrace restaurant in Oakley Court is currently available for reservations. (Please note that you must make an online reservation in advance.)
In addition to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Oakley Court has served as a filming location for a large number of films, primarily horror films such as ‘B movies’ Frankenstein’s Curse (1957), Blood theater (1973) and Dracula’s wives (1960).
