Watch what she actually does in her free time and buy into that, rather than into the age bracket printed on the packaging.

Comfort items are almost always a hit because they get used every single day through the winter, long after the novelty of other presents has worn off. They also photograph beautifully under a tree.

• A proper blanket hoodie in a colour she genuinely likes, not the one you prefer. Ask her, or check what she already wears on repeat.

By eleven or twelve, tastes are sharp and opinions sharper. This is the age where an experience or a carefully chosen practical gift usually beats a toy, and where guessing badly is most painful.

Good options include a simple, gentle skincare set with cleanser and moisturiser rather than anything harsh; a decent pair of over-ear headphones in a neutral colour; a nice pen case and notebooks for someone who has discovered stationery; and a voucher for a shop she actually visits, presented with a handwritten note. A trip together — cinema, pottery class, afternoon tea — is often the gift she remembers, because the point was the company.

Whatever you choose, keep the wrapping thoughtful and the quantity modest. A few well-chosen presents, opened slowly with a cup of tea nearby, will spark far more joy than a tower of boxes opened in a blur at seven in the morning.
